Working at SIS
There must be something special about working at SIS because, at present, a third of our staff have returned to teach at SIS for the second time. In fact the average length of tenure for a teacher at SIS is about six years. Seeing that the average length of time an international teacher stays in one post is just 2 years, it is obvious that teachers at SIS find their work both rewarding and fulfilling.
The continuity of staff at SIS provides great consistency and stability for the students and the dedication of the SIS staff provides the foundation for a culture of ongoing school improvement. SIS only hires teachers who have a genuine love for children and the results of this are obvious in all aspects of school life. Ex-students of SIS frequently report that the teachers they had at SIS were the best teachers they ever had throughout their whole school career.
Obviously this high standard does not come about by accident. The initial selection of staff to work at SIS is a crucial decision. On arrival in Sanaa new teachers undergo another five days of orientation and training in the teaching methods, practices and procedures of SIS. Throughout the year weekly staff meetings continue to revisit the important principles that guide the school.

The demands placed on staff at SIS are considerably higher than those normally found in schools. Staff are expected to be totally committed to the success of the students. When students are having difficulty SIS staff make the time and deliver the teaching approach necessary for that student's success. As staff we take the responsibility to provide the conditions for success for the students in our care. It is likely that working at SIS will be the hardest work ever experienced by a teacher.
As with other things in life, the amount that is invested in a project is related to the rewards.
Though a lot is demanded of SIS staff there is a great deal of support. The school is superbly equipped with modern materials and resources. Elementary teachers have the assistance of a paraprofessional. The administration sees its role as one of supporting the teacher in the classroom. And a skilled team of support staff is constantly working in the background to support the teaching staff. The school recognizes that the most important ingredient in the learning process is the teacher, and therefore looking after the teaching staff is a top priority.
SIS teachers are top quality professionals committed to providing a loving and caring climate, where the emphasis is on students learning in a cooperative and fun environment.
