SIS Student Council

The SIS student council was formed in October 1995 in response to a student-felt need to address student issues. It has operated continuously since then and has had a major impact on school life. Through the student council members of the SIS student body have been able to participate in the political process while members of the council have been able to develop their leadership skills.

The major thrust of the council is fundraising which it does through its Student Store.  Money raised by Student Store sales has been used to provide ethnic furniture for common areas, cementing and stocking of two school ponds, purchase of a camera for the journalism department, provision of a tennis net, and many similar projects.

The student council also organizes school parties for both elementary and secondary students, solicits and organizes donations for the community service program, and supports the athletic department and excursion committee.

Student Activities

Sanaa International School givees students a number of opportunities to step into leadership roles.

The Student Store
The students run a store that is open at lunch and recess times. The store sells various food and drink items. Students are responsible for planning, ordering, recording and serving in the store.

Community Service Club
The Community Service Club gets involved in activities that benefit some of the less fortunate communities in Sanaa. Collections and visits are made to provide blankets, clothes, and food to some of the orphanages in the city.

Conservation Club
Members of the Conservation Club take responsibility for the numerous recycling projects at SIS.

Flea Markets
Twice a year Flea Markets are held at the SIS Preschool campus (in the center of town). Students organize the tables and run games and activities during these events.

Intramural Activities
Students organize various intramural sporting competitions that take place during lunch times. They are responsible for the rules of the competition, the organizing and the refereeing of games.

Elementary Activites
Secondary students have the opportunity to assist or lead after-school activities for the elementary students. This is of particular interest to students with sporting or artistic interests.

School Improvement Committee
Students are invited to join the School Improvement Committee which examines ways to continually improve SIS. This committee is also involved in the school's accreditation process.
