  A Short History of QSI

• Beginning

Mr. Jim Gilson, co-founder and president of Quality Schools International, opened the school in Sanaa, Yemen in September of 1971 by financing it with his salary from a teaching contract with ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia. During the first year of operation Sanaa International School quickly grew from 4 to 25 students, allowing Mr. & Mrs. Gilson and family to move to Sanaa the second school year, Having developed an educational program of excellence combined with the need for new schools in the countries formed by the changes in the former communist world, QSI was formed.

• Growth

Looking back on those early years, it’s amazing to think that a tiny school in Sanaa would one day grow and become the seed for so many others. From that seed in 1991 came Quality Schools International that today operates 27 international schools of various sizes from about a dozen to over 250 students in Kiev, Ukraine. QSI has met the challenge to establish small schools in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Far East, and the Middle East. Who would have ever thought that this vision to start a school in Yemen would expand to serve new developing countries around the world? Who would have imagined that the enrollment in Almaty, Kiev, Shekou, and Bratislava would rise to exceed that of Sanaa International School?

• Educational Model

Quality Schools International not only grew in student numbers, but also in developing strategies and curriculum which foster student learning. Mastery learning, a performance based model, became the foundation upon which QSI was built. Traditional learning was turned upside down. Learning would be prescribed in a non-threatening environment and testing would prove that the intended learning had occurred at a high level. Students who need more time to learn would get more time. Traditional grading was tossed out and replaced with just two evaluations: “A” or “B” (or you’re not done yet!). “Success for All” became a reality.

• Vision

This vision of Quality Schools International was shared by Mr. Duane Root, co-founder and Vice President of QSI, along with many others, who were instrumental in the development of QSI. Their work continues today, making QSI a strong, viable, non-profit educational institution, leading the way into the 21st century.
