Middle and Secondary Levels Academic Programs

Twelve and thirteen year-olds are considered Middle School, and older students are Secondary Level. Certified subject area specialist teachers instruct all courses for all middle and secondary level courses at BIS. Some classes are separated, but courses that do not require prerequisites may be toggled from year to year to offer a combined class at Middle School (12 and 13-year olds), Lower Secondary (Secondary I and II) and Upper Secondary (Secondary III and IV) levels. The individualized approach continues at this level through the close monitoring of progress in each unit and a formalized system of safety-nets. Safety Net meetings are attended weekly by all subject area teachers and the school administration to address the academic, social, and emotional needs of each student. The school counselor takes referrals from these meetings and is actively engaged in the weekly counseling sessions scheduled for each homeroom. The school program includes eight period days, and students at the Secondary level earn credits towards graduation. Three graduation diplomas are offered at BIS: Practical Diploma, Academic Diploma, and Academic Diploma with Honors. Most graduates earn an Academic Diploma that is competitive for securing seats at reputable universities. The choice of Russian, French, Azeri, or Turkish is offered to students who are six years old and above five days a week.

Middle and Secondary Levels After-School Programs

Students enjoy an active Student Government and a rich array of after-school activities, sports, and social events. A competitive sports program is available to Middle and Secondary level students in accordance to the Silk Road Activities Association. Seasonal sports includes: cross-country, soccer, basketball, and track & field. A tournament between many international schools in the Caucasus concludes the end of each seasonal sport.

Baku International School is fully accredited kindergarten through secondary (high school) graduation by internationally recognized Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the United States.
